Avid otaku resistance in the face of indisputable fanboyism. Love for fringe anime, assorted manga and numerous other Japanese diversions.

The first episode of Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 was marvellous - here I was begging for realism and convincing characters, and look what turns up! It's 'just what the doctor ordered' in that sense for me. The Abingdon Boys School op theme and Kou "Haibane Renmei" Otani offer the icing on the cake in terms of music but it's a breath of fresh air in the same way that Eden of the East was in recent weeks. Convincing characters in convincing situations that provides a change of pace from everything else.

Bakemonogatari is tentatively on my to-watch list now, but I confess that's purely because I have a fascination with Shinbo's directing style. Looks like a nice varied viewing routine is emerging...

I have to give particular credit to how Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 makes you forget the distinct sense of foreboding it sets up from the start. I was so charmed by Yuuki’s gleeful innocence that I ignored the inevitable conclusion his character was facing.

Indeed. I am very much taken by this as well.
