Codex Animu

Welcome to the Codex Animu, the rather pretentious name for my annotated blogroll. If you’ve linked me and I haven’t reciprocated here, please email me and tell me as much. Equally, if you just fancy a link with a smarmy comment next to it, please get in contact.

  • Bateszi – The seminal Brit anime blogger. If the anime blogging sphere were a newspaper Bateszi would be its star columnist. Puts the rest of us to shame, really. Also has a quick blog called Afterimage.
  • Epic Win – Refining the paired blogging formula to a fine art, Orion and Guff offer banter and insight with style and panache.
  • 物の哀れ (Mono no aware) – Embodying the British colonial spirit by diligently documenting his experiences with the culture of those Eastern savages, Martin is a bastion of consistency in the community.
  • Cruel Angel Theses – I like to imagine Owen as the C-3PO of anime blogging, only camper and more preoccupied with the mechanics of logic. Equipped with a special device that punches you until you stop being a fallacious ingrate, all anime bloggers fear his watchful gaze
  • Azure Flame – Much like Martin, Karura puts everyone else in the ground for constant, often daily, quality updates. She also manages to blog in new and exciting ways, being, like, funny and shit, too. Girls really are better than boys.
  • Animanachronism – The amount of syllables in ‘Animanachronism’ is suggestive of much. Like reading the works of Henry James you are intellectually bettered for reading IKnight’s thoughtful musings.
  • I MUST SUCCEED – Still the most readable, entertaining anime blog around, even if she thinks the anime blogging community are a bunch of ego-fellating idiots. Let’s hope she doesn’t read this particular sycophantic parade.
  • anime|otaku – Like reading the works of Thomas Pynchon, Mike’s blog will make you feel like a cretinous ingrate philistine who has only ever read three books and flings excrement at the walls for recreation. Luckily I’ve read at least four and use a toilet.
  • Heterochromia – Fine purveyor of manga and anime, Sasa’s taste is very similar to my own and as a result completely sexcellent.
  • That’s Not Kanon – Another one of the smart kids, Hidoshi laxes theoretical with highly insightful results. Never one to settle for the status-quo, he reminds you that wanting and expecting quality is your right and duty.
  • Chotto Matte! – A blogger that proves it is possible to be more infrequent than I, Matte offers interesting thoughts on a number of excellent shows nonetheless. A friend from the old #animenano days. Listless sigh.
  • THAT Animeblog – A blog I read mostly for Lupus’s postings, THAT offers a variety of interesting content from countless authors. I hear Impz occasionally posts there, too. He’s been in newspapers, you know.
  • Subculture – Totali offers a broad cross-section of coverage on various shows and lavishes you with numerous screenshots for added aesthetic jollies. Another one of these ‘frequent updater’ types. Very suspicious.
  • RIUVA – tj_han has seemingly replaced his countless figurine reviews with stick-figure 4koma and random food reviews, yet he remains (with his new co-posters) thoroughly entertaining.
  • Daijoubu – Titled after one of the few parts of Japanese I understand, DS’s blog is much more than appeasing statements about your well-being. Armed with dangos of every variety he covers a wide variety of shows; most of which I don’t watch, but enjoy reading about nonetheless.
  • damnz – Blog en español and I can’t read a word of it, but he covers a number of excellent shows and I’m sure for the non-monolingual idiots out there it’s a solid read.
  • Memento – Beyond the obvious that Garten is the certified Daddy of anime blogging, he also linked me as a fledgling manga blog all those years ago and for which I’ll always be grateful.
  • Tokyo Jupiter – Another Senpai that leant a helping hand when I was bumbling and inept (CO-CHI~). Reika’s livejournal is updated much more than her blog, yet it remains an institution and worthy of recognition.
  • Drastic – TheBigN is one of the sphere’s true stalwarts and remains thoroughly affable in both his blog and commenting forms.
  • Iwa ni Hana – Wabi Sabi is purveyor of all that is left-field and interesting the world of anime and cinema. A fundamental resource for those who love the dark, the serious and the strange.
  • The Moral Anti-Realist – Berkles intermingles anime, philosophy and politics into his blogging formula with interesting results. Great for introductions to philosophical concepts, which are then accentuated by a sound taste in anime.
  • far away no where – j.valdez, though mildly traumatised by School Days, manages to overcome his fear of little girls with sharp knives and write lots of interesting things on a variety of shows.
  • itsubun – A victim of Impz’s THAT authorship machinations who, uncharacteristically, also runs her own blog. Good thing, too, because more bloggers with this kind of taste need to spread the word.
  • In Search of Number Nine – inksbane covers a wide variety of topics that provokes thought and inspires response. Definitely for readers who like to engage their brainmeats.
  • Lelangiric – lelangir’s blog reminds me of the Lit Theory module I did in third year. I’m captivated by its subject matter, yet completely depressed by my want of academic chops in understanding it all. Definitely one for those who want to learn about new theories and ideas. Or, indeed, for those who already know fine well how intelligent they are.
  • Omonomono – I’m envious of Omo’s writing style. It seems at once so relaxed and amiable while maintaining an air of erudition and wit. Always a pleasure to read.
  • The Scrumptious Anime Blog – It’s basically rubbish that I haven’t added usaijen and her merry band of friends to this list sooner. She’s been around the ‘sphere for an age and is also awesome.
  • Baka-Raptor – It’s cool how no one seems to have noticed Baka-Raptor is basically the aniblogger Maddox, but then that doesn’t matter. He’s as amusing and delightfully contentious as that grumpy old fucker.
  • Super Fanicom – Pretty much the Meat Feast of anime blogs. Initially quite an intimidating prospect but wholly satisfying when you sit down and get stuck in.
  • Ha Neul Seom – gaguri covers everything I’m interested in and covers them real good. The serene blog layout is very suggestive of his approach, too.
  • Fuzakenna! – 21stcenturydigitalboy has pretty cracking taste and the passion to drive it home to those uneducated. It makes for very appealing reading and reminds us what terrible disinterested people we can be. Don’t fuck with me indeed.
  • We Remember Love – ghostlightning generally takes what the ‘sphere has to say about a show and writes something better. Arguable the last stop on most anime analysis.
  • Grand Punk Railroad – Another Brit anime blogger to add to your collection. We’re pretty good at this, us.
  • The Moritheil Review – Meta-blogging that isn’t pompously self-important, or at least so extremely so as to be hilarious. A very entertaining read. Moritheil also blogs here.
  • Christ on a bike. Why did I ever decide to do an annotated blog roll? Sorry if you’re not listed here yet (it’s because I’m shit). More additions forthcoming, as always.
